The Role/Importance of Education in the Society

The role/importance of education is not a farfetched concept. Education is really a global affair that people overlook its potency.

The meaning, roles/importance of education will be succinctly discussed here.

What is Education?

Education is simply the process or art of imparting knowledge, skills, judgments, facts and ideas to a learner to make him better both socially, physically, psychologically and otherwise.

When we talk about education, we are centering on formal and informal education. The intrinsic and extrinsic values derived from education have really driven home the importance of education.

The quotes from educational scholars outlined below stress, the roles of education which are;

~The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically- Martin Luther King.

~The aim of education is the knowledge, not of facts but of values- William Burroughs.

~The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet. -Anstotle.

~Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school-Albert Einstein.

~Education is the passport to the future for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare it – Malcom x.

~Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world-Nelson Mandela.

Philosophers have really understood the etymological need for education and they have shown this by providing the philosophical tools, theories, principles and methods for elucidation and solution of educational problem(Aminigo Nwaokugha, 2006:8).

Even our forefathers valued education during pre-colonial era. The vast difference between their education and the present day education is that theirs was informal; as there were no systematic or organized methodology used in their educational process.

Their teachers were mainly their relatives. But it is sad to say that people have overlooked the importance of education in our lives. Now let’s hit the nail on the head. What are the importance of education in the society?

Education increases knowledge. Knowledge they say, is power. Education is really a process that makes an illiterate person acquire knowledge.

It even broadens the horizon of a knowledgeable person. Illiteracy is a disease which every person who wants to fit into the elite class in the world need to avoid.

Education exposes one to intrinsic and intrinsic awareness of what is void to him. The world is undergoing series of development. Consequently, education instills in us, the needed knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something better.

People always argue whether education is the only thing that gives knowledge. A lot of them asserts that education is the process of gaining information about the surrounding world, while knowledge is another thing altogether. Granted, they may be right; but on a rational basis, information cannot be converted into knowledge without education.

Furthermore, education is an important tool for everyone to succeed in life and get something different. Education is like the engine that effects success in life. How do I mean? Having a good education is crucial to succeed in life .

This validates the aphorism, ‘education is the key to success’. A good education is important, because without it, it will be a herculean task to succeed in some aspects of life. However, education develops a person to think independently and communicate intelligently to people.

An educated person does something conspicuously different, or rather unique which is a crystal contrast with others around him. Education builds in a person a self esteem which enables him carry lout innovation that is unique.

Undoubtedly, a person who undergoes a good education succeeds in any aspect of life than an uneducated person. He succeeds in a particular field of profession and his prowess cannot be underestimated.

Moreso, education opens the door to the exciting opportunities of achieving better prospects in life. It must be remembered that there are different opportunities opened to an educated person which is determined by his field of study.

Opportunities like being a lawyer, doctor, lecturer, engineer, bankers, accountants, etc are solely a product of education. A person cannot give what he doesn’t have. For the door of opportunities to be opened to you by education, you must get educated to fit in.

Students in secondary school have been awarded scholarship to further their education. Isn’t that a door of opportunity?

It is through education that they realized that. If these particular students had chosen not to be educated, would they have seen salivating opportunities like this? I presume your answer will be no. Education has opened the door for people to be invited to different conferences, both national and international because of their educated status.

Education is the root of success through the different doors of opportunities it opens. We have renowned people like late Chinua Achebe, the great African writer who went into the doors of opportunities education proffer. He made a feat in education before his demise.

How aid he achieve it? Through EDUCATION.

Additionally, education boosts confidence. An educated person is a confident person. This is undoubtedly true because an educated person can boldly stand in the midst of anybody to relate his ideas, philosophies, knowledge and skills without hesitation.

But is this possible for an educated person? No. I think it will be helpful if everybody will hearken to this. Confident people are often mostly successful in both their work and personal lives.

The confidence education instills in a students enables him to present ideas in discussions or arguments. This confidence also instigates judicious decision-making as reasonable decisions are derived through knowledge.

For instance, students who get educated for business qualification are equipped with the skills of making better and bolder decisions on finance, project management, business strategy, managing teams and much more. This confidence accrued from education really prepares a person to face challenges successfully.

Finally, education makes the future bright for a person and society at large. I do believe that everybody has a bright future. But this future cannot be bright when a person folds his hand by not getting education. Education equips our young ones to fix problems, build on things that could make their future blinks.

A child has always dreamt of being a doctor. He attains tertiary education and comes out in a flying colour in the medical profession. Another child has always repudiated attaining education and becomes a vagabond. Which of this two has attained his bright future? It is clearly the former as his  doctorship is a shining amour. This pertinent instance portrays how education brightens the future of a person.

How does education brightens the future of a society? Education empowers women to marry reasonably, have fewer children and educate their children. Many people think education is not important to the society, but if we cogitate on some of the problems facing us today like terrorism, poverty, civil unrest, human trafficking, human abuse-education can address these problems, hasn’t the future of the society be brightened?

I suppose it does. Even Statistics on Education and Research has really pinpointed the advance development in the educational sector. Statistics education research which;  is an emerging field that grew out of different disciplines is currently establishing itself as a unique field that is devoted to the improvement of teaching and learning statistics at all educational levels.

In conclusion, the roles / importance of education are really promising that people should embrace education readily to make the world a better place. If we interview people who had made their feat in education, their testimonies would be exciting ones. Illiteracy is really an unwanted plant that should not be found in the garden of any nation. Illiteracy causes stunted growth to a person and to the society at large. There should both public and private enlightenment on the need to acquire education. Educational sector is the life-blood of a country. Parents, guardians, wards etc should endeavor to inculcate into their children the need for education.

If everybody in every country of the world will be educated, I can attest that the world will be a better place.

From the aforementioned, it is proven that education is really important.
