DECEPTION
There was a firm knock at the door. Mrs Michael approached the door. She held the door knob and swiftly opened the door. Her face fell when she saw two hefty policemen standing and surveying their house like State town planners about to mark it for demolishment.
"Good afternoon madam." One of the policemen greeted. He dipped his hand in his breast pocket and drew out a rectangular plastic. It was the police I.D. Extending his hand with the I.D to Mrs Michael's face, he said:
“We are just coming from the state hospital. An autopsy was conducted on Late Mr David who if i'm correct was your family friend. It showed he died through food poisoning. We were also told by his wife that he was in your house before he left for his house where his death occurred. "
Mrs Michael became momentarily dumb. She remained speechless as she continued staring at them like a bemused she-goat. When the inactivity intensified, the husband who had waited inside for her to emerge with the visitors came out.
"What's going on here?" Mr Michael asked with utter confusion.
The policemen issued their I.D to him. He knew it was coming. The policemen repeated the reason for their coming.
"We want the two of you to follow us to the station for further clarifications."
Mr Michael made an attempt to object, but he was interrupted.
"Sir, any word you let out will be used against you in the court of law." The policemen bellowed and made a motion with his hand for them to start going.
"Give me some minutes to lock the door."
Mr Michael took up the case at the police station.
"Officer, I have a confession to make. I killed my friend David." The wife was shocked.
"Honey, you did what?" She managed to talk.
"You and David are smokescreens who deserved to die. You are lucky the policemen intervened miraculously. You would have been the next corpse; as I put the same poison in our breakfast for today. I put the poison in the food you dished out to him when you two were not aware that day he died. I don't regret my action one bit."
"What did we do to deserve this gross act?"
"I was coming back from work one day and overheard you two discussing at the garden. You were talking about how to abort his baby which you said was three month old .I became so hurt. You are an infidel."
"Michael!" he wife shouted his name for the first time in their marriage. "That were the lines in the script we were rehearsing for the movie we shot at our studio. I wasn't sleeping with him not to talk of getting pregnant. You allowed jealousy blind you. Could this be the reason for your cold attitude towards me? I see. Officer, make sure he rots in jail." She concluded and left in anger.
Mr Michael broke down in tears. He wished he could draw back the hand of time. Why was he so myopic? The policeman ordered him to go into the cell as more judgements awaited him.
